Is this what you’re seeing?

These are the layout and editor problems I’m asked about most. Seeing something different? Tell me what’s happening.

I changed it and can’t undo it

You moved, deleted or restyled something, and now you can’t get the page back to how it was.

The editor won’t load

Elementor is stuck on its loading screen, or the block editor shows a blank page or crashes.

Broken after an update

After updating Elementor, Elementor Pro, your theme or WordPress, the layout, menus or forms have stopped working.

Fine in the editor, broken live

The page looks right while you’re editing, but visitors see something different, or your changes don’t show at all.

Wrong on mobile

Columns overlap, text runs off the screen, or sections look squashed on phones.

Header problems

A sticky header covers your content, stops sticking, or the header or footer has disappeared.

Popups and menus won’t open

The mobile menu, a popup or an FAQ doesn’t open, or can’t be closed.

“Unexpected or invalid content”

The block editor says a block “contains unexpected or invalid content”, or a custom block has stopped working.

Before you do anything else

A layout that’s gone wrong can usually be put back, as long as nothing else gets changed first.

  • Look at the page’s revisions

WordPress and Elementor both keep earlier versions of a page. The one from before your change may still be there.

  • Don’t update or roll back Elementor and Elementor Pro separately

They need versions that work together. Changing one on its own can break more pages.

  • Don’t click “Attempt block recovery” on every block

It can throw away settings the block needed. Leave it until we know why it happened.

  • Screenshot the editor and the live page

On desktop and on your phone. The difference between them tells me where to look first.

Why layouts break

What you see on a page comes from several places at once: the page builder or blocks, your theme’s styles, any custom code a developer added, and the settings for each screen size. The editor doesn’t always show all of them, which is why a page can look right while you edit it and wrong to visitors.

I work out which of those is causing the problem and fix it there. I don’t swap your site to a different page builder or rebuild pages that only need one part put right.

Included in every fix

  • Finding what’s causing the problem: the builder, the theme, custom code or a cache
  • A full backup before I change anything
  • A check on desktop, tablet and phone
  • Your existing design kept, not replaced
  • Elementor, Elementor Pro and the block editor (Gutenberg)
  • A plain-English note of what I changed

A London restaurant

Elementor and Elementor Pro out of step

During maintenance and a hosting move, a change of Elementor version caused a fatal error and stopped parts of the site working. Rather than leave it on a shaky mix of versions, I found a pair that worked together, Elementor 3.20.4 with Elementor Pro 3.20.0, and put that back in place.

What I did: with the stable pair in place, the contact form and the popup menu were working again.

A brand’s block editor site

Custom Gutenberg layouts put right

The site was built with the block editor and custom design touches. I worked on its homepage hero, content spilling out of its box, a scrolling banner, the sticky header, popups, the FAQ section and the layout on smaller screens.

What I did: fixed each part where it lived, in the blocks, theme styles and scripts, without a rebuild or a new page builder.

How it works

1

Order and show me the page

Send the page address, a screenshot, and what it should look like. An older screenshot of how it was is ideal.

2

Give me access

You add me as a user in WordPress, so you never need to send me your password.

3

I fix it where it lives

I take a full backup, find whether the builder, theme, custom code or a cache is at fault, and fix it there.

4

You check it on your phone

I check it on desktop, tablet and phone, then send you a plain-English note of what I changed.

Elementor and Gutenberg questions

Can you fix my layout without rebuilding the page?

Usually, yes. I find the part that’s wrong, whether that’s a section’s settings, the theme’s styles or some custom code, and put it right while keeping your design. If a page really can’t be saved, I’ll tell you why before you spend more.

Can you undo the changes I made?

Often, yes. WordPress and Elementor keep earlier versions of each page, and I’ll check those first. If there isn’t a usable version, I’ll rebuild just the part that changed, using a screenshot of how it was if you have one.

Elementor broke after an update. Should I roll it back?

Not on your own, and never Elementor without Elementor Pro, or the other way round. They need versions that work together. I take a backup, find a pair that works with your site, and get you back to a stable state. Then we can plan the update properly.

Why does my page look different to visitors than in the editor?

Usually a cache is showing visitors an older copy, or your theme’s styles or custom code change the page after it leaves the editor. Settings for phones and tablets can differ from desktop, too. I check each of these in turn.

Should I switch from Elementor to the block editor, or the other way round?

Not to fix a problem. Changing page builder means rebuilding every page. If you’re thinking about it for other reasons, I’m happy to talk through whether it’s worth it for your site.

Do you work on sites you didn’t build?

Yes. Whoever built your site, I’ll get familiar with how its pages, templates and any custom code are put together before changing anything.

Do I need to give you my password?

No. You add me as a user in WordPress with my own login, so your password stays yours. You can remove me as soon as the job’s done.

Do I need my own Elementor Pro licence?

If your site uses Elementor Pro, yes. The licence belongs to your site, and it’s what lets Elementor Pro receive updates. I’ll work with the licence you have.
